Man, 31, Wanted For Forgery, Felonies Found Asleep At Wheel In Greenwich, Police Say

A Long Island man found sleeping at the wheel of his vehicle in Fairfield County was later charged with being a fugitive from justice.

Matthew Amato, 31, of West Islip, was found around 6:18 a.m., Thursday, April 25, in his 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee in the travel lane of Sound Shore Drive by Greenwich Police, said Greenwich Police Lt. John Slusarz.

Upon an investigation, officers found that Amato was wanted on several warrants in Suffolk County for two counts of forgery, police said. 

Amato was arrested and charged with being a fugitive from justice. 

He is being held on $500,000 and is scheduled to appear in court on May 9. 

Law-enforcement authorities on Long Island were notified of his arrest.
